Forest Co-op Shallow Soils (ES 11 & 12) Project
This four-year $320,000 provincially-approved exceptions monitoring project in Northwestern Ontario commenced in 2001 to study whether or not the additional nutrient removal and soil disturbance associated with full-tree harvesting would have a detrimental impact on the longterm sustainability of forest management on shallow soils sites. The project has consisted of detailed, repeated, pre- and post-harvest soil and vegetation surveys for eight Level I Case Study sites which include both full-tree and tree-length treatment blocks.
In conjunction with this project, some 100 Level II plots were established by the individual partners at their own cost which would conservatively be estimated as an in-kind value of some $100,000. These plots will be incorporated into the Forest Co-op Growth & Yield Permanent Growth Plot database.
The project will be completed in early 2005.
